The Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation (LPBF) is the only non-profit, science driven environmental organization dedicated to protecting and enhancing Lake Pontchartrain and its basin. The Pontchartrain Basin is a 10,000 square mile watershed which includes 16 Louisiana Parishes, 4 Mississippi Counties and the most densely populated areas in Louisiana, New Orleans and Baton Rouge. At its core is Lake Pontchartrain, a 630 square mile estuary. In 2019 LPBF will celebrate 30 years of protecting our environment, our economy and our culture.
LPBF's programs focus on improving water quality, coastal restoration and education. In 2006, LPBF was responsible for the removal of the lake from the Impaired Water Bodies List, allowing people to return to swimming in the lake. Since then eight other bodies of water have been removed. Louisiana is facing a land loss crisis, LPBF's efforts on coastal restoration have included the planting of over 50,000 trees and the engineering behind the creation of new wetlands and a 600 acre delta.
